Emergency First Aid at Work Course (EFAW)
If you have identified that first-aiders are needed in your workplace, they must have a valid certificate of competence in FAW or emergency first aid at work (EFAW).
EFAW training enables a first-aider to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work. As with the Appointed Persons, the role of the EFAW trained member of staff is to deal with First Aid incidents in their place of work. They know when to summon help in the event of an incident and to give immediate first aid assistance to a casualty. They can also support the role of the First Aid at Work (FAW) qualified staff member if available within the organisation.
Their role also includes completion of paperwork and the replenishment of the first aid kit after the event.
An EFAW trained person can now be the sole first aider within an organisation, however the HSE have provided an online assessment tool to support employers in their decision surrounding their duties and requirements in terms of providing trained first aiders in the workplace. The assessment tool can be found here on the HSE website:
http://www.hse.gov.uk/firstaid/assessmenttool.htm
On completion of the course, students will be able to carry out the above as well as:
- Perform Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation ( CPR )
- Complete a Primary Assessment on a conscious and unconscious casualty.
- Control Bleeding
- Deal with a choking casualty
- Recognise other acute medical conditions.
EFAW lasts for at least six hours of training and is run over a minimum of one day, the course that we offer is a 1 day course.
FAW and EFAW certificates last for three years. Before their certificates expire, first-aiders will need to undertake an FAW requalification course or an EFAW course, as appropriate, to obtain another three-year certificate.
HSE strongly recommends that first-aiders undertake annual refresher training, over half a day, during any three-year FAW/EFAW certification period. Although not mandatory, this will help qualified first-aiders maintain their basic skills and keep up to date with any changes to first-aid procedures.
